Utah State Income Taxes

The state of Utah imposes a filing deadline of April 15th for your income taxes, which is easy to remember since your federal return is due then too.

Filing your Utah state income tax return

In Utah, you must use the same filing status on your Utah return as used on your federal return. Only in extreme situations are there exceptions to this rule.

Likewise, if you itemize on your federal return, you must itemize on your statereturn. The same restriction applies if you use the standard deduction.

For a full listing of Utah tax credits and deductions, consult the Utah tax instruction booklet. Credits are detailed on pages 10-13 and deductions on pages 6-9.

A list of the more common allowable Utah state income tax credits and deductions are listed below.

Deductions:

  • one half the federal tax
  • retirement income exemption/deduction
  • adoption expenses
  • Utah educational savings account
  • premiums for long term care
  • premiums for health insurance
  • medical savings account contributions

Credits:

  • income tax paid to another state
  • clean fuel vehicle
  • historical preservation
  • low income housing

As a resident of Utah, any income, including out of state retirement income is taxable. However, you may be eligible for a retirement income deduction of up to $7,500 if you are over the age of 65. For more about this deduction, read the Utah insurance booklet.

Also, capital gains are taxed at the same rate as the rest of your retirement income.

As a nonresident of Utah, you may still need to file a Utah state income tax return. If you earn any income from Utah during the tax year and are required to file a federal return, you must also file a Utah state income tax return.

Sidebar
You can work on your Utah tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file).

Note: if you are filing more than one state return, you must file a paper return for each additional state, as TurboTax for The Web only allows one state prep.
