Filing your South Carolina state income tax returnThe filing status of your federal and state return is usually the same. However, if you and your spouse are residents of different states, your filing status may be different.
As a nonresident of South Carolina, all income you earn in South Carolina is subject to tax. Individuals earning an income from South Carolina but not a resident individual should file a form SC1040 and Schedule NR.
Residents of South Carolina are taxed on income earned in the state as well as retirement income received from outside the state. However, taxpayers may deduct up to $3,000 of qualifying retirement income annually until reaching age 65. After the age of 65, a taxpayer can deduct up to $10,000 of such retirement income each year.
Similarly, individuals are allowed a deduction from South Carolina taxable income equal to 44% of the net capital gain recognized in South Carolina.
Besides these two tax deductions, South Carolina offers other tax credits and deductions. Some of the more common tax credits are:
• the tuition tax credit • taxes paid to another state • earned income credit
For more information on these credits as well as a complete list of credits and deductions, consult the South Carolina Department of Revenue website.
