Filing your Rhode Island state income tax return

Your Rhode Island state income tax return is based on your federal income tax return. Because this is the case, your federal income tax return must be completed first. Specific information is then entered directly from the federal return onto your Rhode Island tax return.

In most cases, the same filing status is used on your Rhode Island tax return as on your federal income tax return. However, there are exceptions to this rule, but these are rare and rather extreme. For instance is you are married filing jointly with a spouse who is a part-year resident, your filing status may vary from your filing status used on your federal income tax return.

Normally, if you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return, you do the same on your Rhode Island state income tax return. In fact, the amount you calculate to be your federal itemized deduction, is transferred directly to your Rhode Island state income tax return.

Rhode Island allows you to include deductions and exemptions allowed on your federal income tax return. These include:

  • foreign tax credit,
  • child/dependent careexpenses credit,
  • credit for the elderly/disabled,
  • earned income credit.

Rhode Island's income tax return includes other tax credits in addition to these federal tax credits. To find out what they are and the eligibility requirements for each, read the instruction booklet for the Rhode Island state income tax return.

Furthermore, there are certain instances when a Rhode Island resident may be required to pay taxes to another state. In these cases, the Rhode Island resident is allowed to claim a credit for taxes paid to another state on the Rhode Island state income tax return.

On a different note, Rhode Island is one of the few states to have a separate form used to calculate capital gains. Schedule D needs to be completed by any resident who has capital gains during the tax year.

Finally, a non-resident of Rhode Island who works in Rhode Island must file aRhode Island return if they are filing a Federal return, regardless of theamount earned.
