Filing your Mississippi state income tax return

Generally, your filing status on your Mississippi state income tax return should match the filing status on your federal income tax return. There are exception, such as when you and your spouse are residents of different states, but these are rare.

When completing your Mississippi tax return, you may choose to either itemize deductions or claim the standard deduction, whichever provides the greater tax benefit. Unlike the filing status, the choice you make is not dependent upon your federal return.

Tax deductions for Mississippi are the same as your federal income tax deductions with one exception - the state income tax deduction, which you cannot claim. Also, your deduction amount may be reduced or eliminated depending upon your filing status.

Mississippi also allows its resident to claim tax credits for certain expenses. Some common credits are:

  • child and dependent care credit
  • jobs tax credit
  • training tax credit

There are additional credits, which you can read about on Mississippi's Department of Revenue website.

Finally, as a nonresident of Mississippi with an earned income from a Mississippi source, you are required to file a state tax return if your income exceeds the allowable deductions and exemptions.

Sidebar
You can work on your Mississippi tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file).

Note: if you are filing more than one state return, you must file a paper return for each additional state, as TurboTax for The Web only allows one state prep.
