Filing your Iowa state income tax return

You must file an Iowa income tax return if you were a resident, part-year resident or nonresident of Iowa during the tax year and meet any of the following requirements.

  • Your net income was more than $9,000 for single filers.
  • Your net income was more than $13,500 for all others.
  • Your net income from all sources was $5,000 as a dependent.
  • You were in the military but Iowa is your legal residence.
  • You were a nonresident with income from Iowa of $1,000+.

As for tax credit, Iowa taxpayers may be eligible for a credit for amounts paid for tuition and textbooks for a dependent. The credit is 25% of the first $1,000 paid for each dependent for tuition and textbooks.

Iowa also offers a child and dependent care credit for taxpayers with a net income of less than $40,000.

Finally, Iowa has an earned income credit of 6.5% of the Federal earned income credit that you claimed on your Federal return. Also, the Alternate Tax Computation may benefit some low-income taxpayers by reducing the amount of tax they owe. If your net income is greater than $13,500 and you are not using the single filing status, you may owe less tax by using the Alternate Tax Computation.

Retirement income in Iowa is taxable in Iowa, regardless of whether the source is from a different state or now. However, you may be eligible to exclude from Iowa income tax a portion of the retirement income that is taxable on your Federal return.

You can work on your Iowa tax return online while filing your federal return (you can work on it for free, and pay nothing until you are ready to file).

Note: if you are filing more than one state return, you must file a paper return for each additional state, as TurboTax for The Web only allows one state prep.
