Filing your Arizona state income tax return

You must file an Arizona tax return if your adjusted gross income is more than $11,000 for married joint filers or $5,500 for all other filers.

If you take the standard deduction on your federal income tax return, you can still itemize your deductions on your Arizona state income tax return.

To itemize your deductions, you must first complete the federal Schedule A (even if you don't file it) and your Arizona state Schedule A and attach them both to your state tax return.

Although you can deduct the amount you pay in state income tax on your federal income tax return, you cannot claim any amount paid in federal income tax a deduction on you Arizona state tax return.

Arizona tax laws do not allow a tax credit for children. However, for each child, you can claim an exemption.

Some common credits that are allowed in Arizona are the public school tax credit, the school tuition tax credit, and the family income tax credit.

Income reported on your federal income tax return is taxable in the state of Arizona. This means that retirement income received from another state is still taxable under Arizona laws.

However, if you are taxed twice on income earned in another state, you may be eligible for a tax credit depending upon your filing status with each state. For more information on these specific rules, check out Arizona’s Department of Revenue website.

Capital gains are taxed at the same rate as the rest of your income in Arizona.

Nonresidents that are employed in Arizona need to file an Arizona tax return.
